During this year’s Almedalen Week, goGotland and Coop Gotland are launching a joint initiative to ensure that all food waste is managed and converted into valuable resources. Through the so-called Coop Gotland method, a local cycle is created in which food waste is turned into energy, nutrients, and new products, right here on Gotland.

Under this initiative, food waste from participating venues is sorted and processed on-site, and then transported to Coop Gotland. There, the food waste is converted into products such as plant fertilizer, biogas, and ethanol.

“For many years, we’ve seen the amount of food waste generated at various events, especially during Almedalsveckan. It’s long felt like something we wanted to do more about. That’s why it feels especially meaningful that we can now, together with Coop Gotland, take a concrete step and actually make a real difference. When a salad becomes plant fertilizer and a leftover sandwich becomes alcohol, you realize that even a small action can lead to something big—nothing goes to waste, everything gets a new life, and it’s all done locally here on the island,” says Emelie Ahlin, CEO of goGotland.

In the first phase, the initiative will cover five of our largest venues, with the goal of subsequently expanding the concept to all venues as well as to other events outside of Almedalsveckan.

“This is a clear example of how we can work together to create value from something that would otherwise go to waste. By managing food waste locally on Gotland, we can convert it into energy, nutrients, and new resources, while also contributing to more sustainable development,”says Markus Wahlgren of Coop Gotland.

This initiative is a step toward a more sustainable Almedalen Week and demonstrates how collaboration among local stakeholders can lead to concrete solutions to global challenges.
